Apple’s Craig Federighi said it was going to be the fastest version of OS X to date: “It’s up to 1.4x faster and we’ve seen it twice as snappy switching between apps.”
Apple has improved window management in El Capitan, including the ability to size windows to half the screen, something Microsoft’s Windows has had baked in for years but requires a third-party app such as Moom or manual rearrangement on Yosemite.
Federighi said the company had made many hundreds of small changes to the rest of Apple’s core apps, including Safari which can now pin tabs within the tab bar in the corner and can load instantly.

OS X El Capitan is available to developers today. A public beta will start in July, and it will be available to everyone in the fall.
"We honestly just don't want to know," said Federighi. "All of this is done on device and it stays on your device, under your control."

Siri Proactive. In iOS 9, the new software for the iPhone and iPad, Siri is getting a big update. Siri is going to attempt to guess what you want to know, before you ask it. Just like Google Now.
Apple's iOS smart assistant is getting an upgrade, called Siri Proactive, that includes predictive tools. It has smart reminders that know more about your location and habits. It pulls from your search history, emails and calendar to give smarter search results to surface information and suggest apps.
"This is all context sensitive to the time, the place and even the devices you're connected to," said Federighi.
Apple Pay. Square's next card reader will accept Apple Pay. Apple Pay will also be available to people in the United Kingdom starting in July, including support for public transit. Apple's Passbook app is being renamed Wallet, and will support retail loyalty cards.

IPad users can also get split screen apps and improved app switching and keyboard shortcuts. They might seem minor but small improvements like this push the iPad that much closer to being a serious word-processing device.

Some Apple Macs have a particularly terrible flaw that lets hackers sneak in and remain undetected, a security researcher has found.
It means a hacker could -- from far away -- force a Mac into a coma. Personal, corporate or government Macs could be spied on in a way that even the best security checks wouldn't discover -- until it's way too late.
"This is scary," said Sarah Edwards, a forensic analyst at the SANS Institute who specializes in reviewing computers for evidence of hacks. "I would never see this. There could be funky stuff going on in the computer system, and I would never know why."
All computers have some kind of basic input/output system (BIOS), the core program that brings a machine to life. It's the kind of thing you should never tamper with. And it should obviously remain heavily guarded.
When a Mac goes into sleep mode and wakes back up, it allows direct access to the BIOS. It's a weird quirk that lets someone tamper with the code there. That's what was discovered recently by Pedro Vilaça, a curious independent computer security researcher in Portugal.

Several cybersecurity experts confirmed that this is a real problem, and they plan to research further in the next few weeks.
This isn't an easy hack. An attacker first needs administrative access to a machine. But what this means is that if a Mac gets hacked with a low-level computer virus, it can bury so deep you'll never find it.
That's the real problem here. It gives hackers more time to plot a massive bank heist or a huge corporate takedown, like the Sony Pictures hack.
The average Mac user doesn't have to worry about this one, because they're actually susceptible to cheaper, easier hacks -- that are easier to spot and fix. So says Katie Moussouris, an executive at HackerOne, which helps companies fix dangerous computer bugs.

Tod Beardsley, a security research manager at cybersecurity firm Rapid7, stressed that most Mac users aren't likely to get hacked because of this bug. He said the flaw is "certainly surprising ... but the bar of difficulty is pretty high."
This is the second major flaw in Apple devices discovered in the last week. Recently, people discovered that you can crash someone's iPhone simply by sending it a text message.
Vilaça decided not to name this bug. But every major computer flaw nowadays deserves a name. Given that it involves a poisonous kiss that wakes a sleeping Mac.

Leaked Celebrity Nudes

Leaked celebrity nude photos inspire instant adoration and fascination from the masses, most of whom are sexually frustrated enough to care. This is the state of today’s celebrities. Especially if you want to get or stay famous. The mass breach of privacy, now known as The Fappening, has involved some of the biggest celebrities around.
On August 31, 2014 leaked pictures were posted on the website 4chan that were allegedly taken through an exploit of iCloud, where iPhone photos are automatically synced. The photographs were allegedly sold for bitcoin. Victims of the hack were alleged to include Jennifer Lawrence, Jenny McCarthy, Rihanna, Kate Upton, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kirsten Dunst, Ariana Grande, and Victoria Justice. Lawrence and Winstead confirmed the authenticity of the photos, while Grande and Justice denied the photos were of them.The event, which media outlets and internet users referred to under names such as "Celebgate" and "The Fappening", was met with a varied reaction from the media and fellow celebrities. Critics felt that the distribution of the images was a major invasion of privacy for their subjects, while some of the allegedly depicted subjects questioned their authenticity. The leak also prompted increased concern from analysts surrounding the privacy and security of cloud computing services such as iCloud—with a particular emphasis on their use to store sensitive, private information.

Content and victims
The original release contained photos and videos of more than 100 individuals that were allegedly obtained from file storage on hacked iCloud accounts,including some the leakers claimed were A-list celebrities. Shortly after the photos were leaked, several affected celebrities issued statements to either confirm or deny the photos' authenticity. Celebrities that have confirmed the photos' authenticity include Jennifer Lawrence (confirmed by her publicist), Kate Upton and her boyfriend Justin Verlander (confirmed by Upton's lawyer), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (confirmed on Twitter),  Jessica Brown Findlay (confirmed by spokesman), Kaley Cuoco (confirmed via Instagram),  and Kirsten Dunst, who also criticized the iCloud service. Jill Scott confirmed on Twitter that one of the leaked photos was of her while stating that another was fake.

Celebrities who have denied the photos' authenticity include Ariana Grande and Yvonne Strahovski. Olympic gymnast McKayla Maroney initially denied the images' authenticity on Twitter, then later confirmed that the photos were legitimate while also stating she was underage at the time they were taken. Victoria Justice denied that the photos were authentic but later stated on Twitter that she was pursuing legal actions and found the leak to be a massive invasion of not just her privacy, but of the privacy of all the celebrities affected by the leak.
According to security expert Nik Cubrilovic, in addition to the photographs, other personal information such as text messages, calendars, address books, phone call logs and any other data stored on their phones and backed up to the service were also likely stolen.

Distribution
After their initial release on 4chan, the photographs were widely circulated online. Attempts made to suppress them were unsuccessful.
Celebrity gossip blogger Perez Hilton posted the photos on his blog after their release, but shortly took them down and issued an apology, saying he had acted in bad taste.
A major site of activity was on the link sharing website reddit, where a subreddit was created to share the photos and gained 75,000 subscriptions in a single day. Reddit admins were criticized for allowing this to take place in an alleged violation of their anti-doxing rules.
The photos were being passed around privately for at least a couple weeks before their public release on August 31, although the details are unclear. There are claims that many more unreleased photos, including video exists.
The hacker responsible for the leak, who described themselves as being a "collector", distributed the leaked images on the image boards 4chan and Anon-IB in exchange for Bitcoin. Ultimately, the images were widely circulated online via other channels, including Imgur and Tumblr. Celebrity gossip blogger Perez Hilton also re-posted some of the photos on his blog, but soon took them down and issued an apology, saying "He had acted in bad taste".
A major center of activity was the link-sharing website Reddit, after a poster with the username "Johnmcjohns" made a subreddit for sharing the photos; in a single day, it amassed over 100,000 followers. Reddit administrators were criticized for allowing this to take place in an alleged violation of their anti-doxing rules. As Maroney was under 18 at the time the photos of her were taken, Reddit staff took photos of her down and warned that anyone re-posting them, or underage photos of Liz Lee which had been circulating prior to this incident, would be permanently banned from the site and could be prosecuted for distributing child pornography. On September 7, citing copyright issues, Reddit banned its "TheFappening" subreddit, also saying the workload of dealing with them had become too much. Reddit banned another subreddit simply named "Fappening" on the same day.

Reaction
The photo leak was condemned by The Guardian, as were those who continued to share the photos. BuzzFeed wrote that there was less slut shaming of the victims than was usual for a celebrity photo hack.
Shortly after the photos were posted online, an article in Forbes advised people not to use iCloud to store sensitive photos and another gave instructions as to how to turn off iCloud altogether.
The incident has been given many names, including "The Fappening" (a portmanteau of the words "the happening", and "fap"; internet slang for masturbation). and "Celebgate" (a reference to Watergate).
On October 1, 2014, Google was sued by lawyer Martin Singer for $100 million on behalf of unnamed victims of the leaks, alleging that Google had refused to respond to requests for the images to be removed from its platforms (including Blogger and YouTube), " to act expeditiously, and responsibly to remove the images", and "knowingly accommodating, facilitating, and perpetuating the unlawful conduct".

Investigation
The FBI said that it was "aware of the allegations concerning computer intrusions and the unlawful release of material involving high profile individuals, and is addressing the matter." Jennifer Lawrence contacted authorities and her publicist has stated that the authorities will prosecute anyone who posts leaked images of her. Forbes columnist, Joseph Steinberg, questioned whether the reactions by law enforcement and technology providers indicated that celebrities were being treated differently than ordinary Americans, which, in the case of law enforcement, may be illegal.
Apple said that it is investigating whether a security breach of their iCloud service was responsible for the leaked photographs stating that they "take user privacy very seriously". The security breach may be related to a vulnerability in Apple's Find My iPhone service which allows hackers to run a script which repeatedly guesses user passwords until the correct password is discovered. Apple has since fixed the flaw. Security experts said that the security breach could have been prevented had two-factor authentication been enabled. "In general Apple has been a little late to the game in offering this kind of protection, and doesn’t advertise it," said Darien Kindlund, director of threat research at security firm FireEye.

Bryan Hamade is the man who is denying that he is the hacker behind the 4Chan nude photo leaks.  According to his story however, he was just trying to scam people out of BTC, which seems pretty reasonable considering how he got doxed by making such an amateur mistake.
New theories are surfacing that Apple's iCloud was never compromised to begin with, and what we are seeing is a picture dump brought to us by a celeb nude trading ring that populates AnonIB.
Despite this, further e-investigation has revealed that Bryan Hamade had went to extensive legnths to prove that he was the original poster of Jennifer Lawrence's nudes, and had posted timestamped evidence that he posted the nudes before they appeared on 4chan. As of 07:55 Monday, Based iCloud Hacker Anon is still on the loose, and recently posted to AnonIB promising more nudes. Also, he didn't get nearly as much BTC as he had hoped because of certain dickheads trying to scam everyone with fake addresses.

Security Policy for Information Security

In this post I am going to reference a well-known security policy that was developed to identify problem areas and the recommended solutions when dealing with information security. This policy is known as the CIA and stands for: Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability. This triad was developed so people will think about these important aspects of security when implementing security controls. There should be a balance between these three aspects of security to ensure the proper use and control of your security solutions.

Confidentiality is, as the word implies, having something be confidential or secure. In essence, privacy is security and confidentiality means that third party individuals cannot read information if they do not have access to it. Data to think about keeping confidential is data stored on a computer (temporary data, data saved, etc.), data stored for backup, data in transit, and data intended for another person. Confidentiality will be the main focus point of this article as it is most often referred to as the most important aspect of security.

Integrity and is specifically referring to data integrity. Integrity is the act of ensuring that data was not modified or deleted by parties that are not authorized to do so. It also ensures that if the data was changed, that the authorized person can know about it. Simply, if you send a message to someone, you want to make sure that the person does not receive a message that was altered during transit. Integrity also confirms that you are in fact speaking to who you think you are speaking to (for example: we download an add-on from the website, you want to make sure that you are downloading from that website and not an unscrupulous third-party).

Finally, the A stands for Availability and ensures that when you need the data it is available to you. Not only does data have to be available to you, but it has to be reasonably accessible. There's no point in security controls if you cannot access the data! This component is a concern, but for the average end user, there is not much that can be done to ensure availability when dealing with webpages, or IRC servers or anything else managed by a third party host. For this reason we will not be discussing Availability except for backing up your data in this guide.

Recommendations

Windows was not built with security in mind, therefor should not be used. Tails is recommended as it is a live DVD or USB that was created to preserve your anonymity and privacy. It allows you to browse the internet anonymously and safely as all applications are preconfigured to run through Tor. Other uses includes encrypting your files, sending and receiving emails and instant messaging, photo editing, document editing and more. Tails also operates completely in RAM so it does not leave a trace on your computer. RAM is Random Access Memory and is wiped when the machine shuts down. Everything that you want saved is done so in secure, encrypted persistent storage. link. Step-by-step instructions for installing Tails can be found here. Another distro I would recommend is Whonix. Whonix is an operating system focused on anonymity, privacy and security. It's based on the Tor anonymity network, Debian GNU/Linux and security by isolation. DNS leaks are impossible, and not even malware with root privileges can find out the user's real IP. If you cannot use Tails or Whonix – or better yet – do not want to use them, you should make sure that Windows is secure.

  1.     Truecrypt] – I would download TrueCrypt and enable FDE (Full Disk Encryption) to make sure that all evidence is encrypted thus allowing you to secure your data . If you do not want to enable FDE, I would create a container and have a Virtual Machine inside the container. Otherwise, EVIDENCE CAN BE EASILY GATHERED BY INVESTIGATORS.
  2.     Tor Browser Bundle– This allows you to browse the internet anonymously. Using TBB will also allow you to visit .onion sites as well as to join the .onion IRC servers with TBB’s instance or Tor.
  3.     Anti-Virus and a Firewall – This will keep your computer protected from viruses as well as remote intruders (most all-in-one anti-virus software has these features).
  4.     I have decided to move a recommendation from later on in this guide to up here. One good recommendation is to create and use a standard account with no Administrative privileges. This way, if a virus is executed, it only has the privileges of the account that you are in. Also, I would make sure your username does not contain your full name as many applications such as Pidgin can share this information. Furthermore, make sure that you create a Windows password that is difficult to guess/attack, as your computer can be explored using that password, over the network.
  5.     (Optional) TorChat – TC is a chat application that runs over Tor to provide an anonymous way to chat.
  6.     (Optional) IRC Client – An IRC client allows you to enter Tor chat rooms to talk to many individuals at one time. You will need one with proxy settings so you can run the client through Tor. Make sure to NOT use DCCas it can expose your IP address. There are several IRC servers that run over Tor (.onion addresses) that you can use. They are all logically connected, so connecting to one will connect you to all.
  7.     (Optional) GPG – for sharing messages and files back and forth over a common medium, GPG ensures confidentiality and integrity.

Make sure to know the differences between the employed solutions and how they protect you. For example, using a VPN does not stop anyone one from stealing your laptop and gathering all your data. Use several layers of security for maximum security.
  •     Do not relay on authentication at the session initiation alone. Use several levels of authentication to ensure that the person you are communicating with is whom they say they are and vice versa.
  •     Assume everything you use is insecure and treat everything like a security threat. Build your security model based on what you do; security is dynamic, not static.
  •     Plan for handling failures, errors, intrusions, and downtime. Focus on what to do when things go bad. Plan and practice that plan. Good security means nothing if what you do does not work.

    • In "Privacy," remember nothing. Remember no history. Always clear everything before closing. You may want to disable cookies, but this is not essential if they are not written to disk and cleared on every browser shutdown.
    • In "Security," warn before installing addons. Remove all exceptions. Remember no passwords.
    • In "Advanced" - Network, set the cache size to 0.
    • In "Advanced" - Update, disable auto updating/checking for updates.
  • Install the Torbutton extension - the one that overhauls browser security, not just change proxy settings. The latest version at this time is 1.4.6
  • OPTIONAL - Install the firefox extension NoScript, allows fine-grade control of javascript, fix javascript links with js disabled, etc. Remove stuff in default whitelist. (I think this is unnecessary and may conflict with Torbutton - Moar)
    • Enable every check mark.
    • Make sure no cookies are written to disk.
    • Clear cookies on any browser shutdown.
    • Clear cookies on Tor toggle ("").
    • Whenever there's an option to choose between Tor and non-Tor, choose Tor.
    • Block tor disk cache, but you'll want to allow memory cache to prevent redownloading of images.
    • Make sure the proxy settings point to privoxy.
    • Disable hotkey/quick toggle if you use the browser for just tor.
  • Set network.http.sendRefererHeader to 0 in about:config. Also set false for network.http.sendSecureXSiteReferrer.
  • In the proxy settings make sure the proxy exceptions list is empty. It can be used as a way for sites to access localhost.
  • One annoying thing about Firefox is the way it handles external applications. You want to disable them all because sites may call telnet for example, which can leak your IP address among other things. Look in about:config for network.protocol-handler.external. You'll want to set the default and all the subsettings to false. Then look for network.protocol-handler.warn-external. You want to set the default and all the subsettings to true. Is there an extension that does this? (Torbutton!)
  • Popups are another annoyance, in "Content" tell it to block pop-up windows with no exceptions.
  • Recently someone has found that Firefox checks for extensions without the user's consent; a temporary solution is to set extensions.blocklist.enabled to false.
  • There are probably other information leaks that could come about if you accidentally click a button, one person has recommended to search through about:config for URLs and blank them out. The types of links I've seen are http, https, and rdp. Don't remove anything with chrome:// or resource:// though. (Some of these are used to phone home when you open the addons window.)
  • Make sure the plugin directory is empty. Do this again every time you update Flash or Shockwave.
  • Set the home page to about:blank
It is a good idea to have a separate Tor browser to make things easier to manage. This becomes so much simpler when you have separate portable browsers each with their own specific purpose - non portable browsers tend to stick data in god knows where while portable ones keep it all in their folder. You should also make sure you use something equivalent to Firefox's "Clear Private Data" feature and make sure evidence doesn't pile up - encrypt what you plan to keep, shred anything you don't. Take measures to prevent your computer from being remotely compromised; heck, encrypt your entire OS if you can, and don't talk about Tor club. :P
Because of the huge amount of lag associated with Tor, pipelining, i.e. sending http requests in batches, makes a lot of sense. Go to about:config and make the following changes:
  • network.http.keep-alive.timeout:600
  • network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy:16
  • network.http.pipelining:true
  • network.http.pipelining.maxrequests:8
  • network.http.proxy.keep-alive:true
  • network.http.proxy.pipelining:true
You should also disable prefetching. This is when the browser tries to predict what the user will click next. It is a waste of Tor bandwidth, and should be disabled by setting:
  • network.prefetch-next:false
There is a test for browser information leaks on TorCheck. Note that it does not test for Flash, go to a non-javascript flash site like MeatSpin and if it loads it means (naturally) flash isn't blocked. Another good test is Last Measure - If it does anything besides show a background image you have work to do (it starts downloading a file but this is harmless - browsers load images all the time for example).

So let's begin by discussing what the Matrix is not. The Matrix is not the physical world. As far as I'm concerned, the physical world is actually real and is in fact governed ceaselessly by the laws of physics. Conversely, the Matrix is also not the Internet, despite what many seem to believe. The Matrix spans and transcends both these worlds.
So then, what is it? Well, that's complicated. Much like in the movie, it's nearly impossible to convey the size and scope of the Matrix to someone who doesn't already see it for what it is. However, unlike the movie, I believe it is an ethical imperative to try to convey it in a literal sense, even to those who are so dependent upon the Matrix that they would fight to protect it. At worst, they won't understand or believe and will continue on about their business. In a sense, I believe Cypher was right to resent Morpheus for what he did, because Morpheus is the social structure that subordinates Humanity to its will. It is the machinery of society that exists solely to perpetuate itself, its influence, and its power independent of any human need. It insulates us from each other and ourselves through deception, and essentially transforms us into servile engines of economic and political output (power). The machines that live off this power are institutions: large corporations, governments, schools, religious institutions, and even non-profit orgs. Every institution will reach a point in its existence where its primary function becomes self-preservation and perpetuation, instead of serving human need. At this point it becomes a machine of the Matrix. For example, when they become machines, governments cease to serve people and instead seek to extend their power over them; corporations prioritize increasing shareholder value over producing quality products or otherwise serving the public good; schools view students as a means and not an end; religious organizations equate membership with salvation (and actively oppose other teachings and even independent practice); and non-profits and charities spend more budget on fund raising activity than on their original focus. Inevitably all large institutions eventually become machines. They become too big for Humanity.

Moreover, given the speed and trajectory at which these technologies are developing, it won’t be long before these devices are operating entirely independent of their human creators, which poses a whole new set of worries. As technology expert Nicholas Carr notes, “As soon as you allow robots, or software programs, to act freely in the world, they’re going to run up against ethically fraught situations and face hard choices that can’t be resolved through statistical models. That will be true of self-driving cars, self-flying drones, and battlefield robots, just as it’s already true, on a lesser scale, with automated vacuum cleaners and lawnmowers.”

For instance, just as the robotic vacuum, Roomba, “makes no distinction between a dust bunny and an insect,” weaponized drones—poised to take to the skies en masse this year—will be incapable of distinguishing between a fleeing criminal and someone merely jogging down a street. For that matter, how do you defend yourself against a robotic cop—such as the Atlas android being developed by the Pentagon—that has been programmed to respond to any perceived threat with violence?

Unfortunately, in our race to the future, we have failed to consider what such dependence on technology might mean for our humanity, not to mention our freedoms.
Let me put it another way. If you were shocked by Edward Snowden’s revelations about how NSA agents have used surveillance to spy on Americans’ phone calls, emails and text messages, can you imagine what unscrupulous government agents could do with access to your internet-connected car, home and medications? Imagine what a SWAT team could do with the ability to access, monitor and control your internet-connected home—locking you in, turning off the lights, activating alarms, etc.

However, hope is not lost. The future looks so dark precisely for the reason that Information Anarchy poses such a grave threat to a major power source for so many parasitical machines. On some level, the Matrix knows its hold is tenuous. At every opportunity, the Matrix will tell you that protecting Intellectual Property encourages creativity. It has even developed an amusing array of propaganda to promote this idea, even going so far as to begin the brainwashing at an early age.
